Liver cirrhosis is an advanced stage of liver disease in which healthy liver cells are gradually replaced by fibrous (scar) tissue. This occurs due to long-term inflammation of liver cells. As inflammation continues, the liver attempts to repair itself by forming scar tissue, but excessive scarring prevents the liver from functioning properly.
Ayurvedic Perspective of Liver Cirrhosis
In Ayurveda, cirrhosis of the liver is comparable to Yakrutodar, which is described as a Kapha–Pitta predominant disorder. The main root cause is Rakta Dushti (impure blood).
The term Yakrutodar indicates an enlarged liver within the abdomen. In advanced stages, liver cirrhosis can lead to Ascites (Jal Sanchiti) — excess fluid accumulation in the abdomen, leading to increased abdominal size.
Causes of Liver Cirrhosis (Ayurvedic View)
Cirrhosis results from chronic inflammation due to long-term liver damage. Common causes:
1. Alcohol-Induced Hepatitis
Long-term heavy alcohol consumption is one of the leading causes.
2. Fatty Liver Disease
Chronic fat accumulation damages liver cells. Often related to metabolic issues: high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
3. Chronic Hepatitis C Infection
A viral infection that often remains unnoticed and gradually leads to cirrhosis.
4. Chronic Hepatitis B Infection
Another viral infection of the liver that may become chronic and cause cirrhosis.
Symptoms of Liver Cirrhosis
Common signs and symptoms include
Early Symptoms
Agnimandya (weak digestive fire) – the most important symptom
Aruchi (loss of appetite, tastelessness)
Adhmana (abdominal fullness and bloating)
Anemia
Weakness and fatigue
Daha (burning sensation)
Bhram (confusion, mood changes)
Upper abdominal pain, especially on the right side
Ignoring these symptoms leads to worsening liver function.
Advanced Stage Symptoms
Jaundice
Pruritus (itchy skin)
Ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen)
Motor dysfunction – tremors, twitching, poor muscle control
In severe cases, Crohn’s Disease can lead to intestinal ulcers, fistulas, and nutritional deficiencies.
