What is Gas & Bloating?

  • Gas: Natural passing of air through the rectum due to digestion.
  • Bloating: A feeling of fullness, tightness, or distension in the abdomen caused by gas buildup.

Both are normal digestive processes, but when gas flow is obstructed, it leads to discomfort, pain, and bloating.

Ayurvedic Perspective of Gas & Bloating

In Ayurveda, gas and bloating are primarily caused by an imbalance of Vata Dosha.
This condition is known as Adhyaman.

When undigested food accumulates in the intestine, it obstructs the Annavaha Srotas (food-carrying channels).
Since the large intestine is the natural home of Vata, this obstruction causes:

  • Increased Vata
  • Abdominal fullness
  • Bloating
  • Pain & cramps

Causes of Gas & Bloating (Ayurvedic View)

1. Indigestion
When Agni (digestive fire) is weak, food is not digested properly and begins to ferment, producing excess gas.

2. Improper Diet
Some foods naturally produce gas, such as:

  • Beans, lentils, legumes
  • Raw vegetables
  • Certain fruits
  • Carbonated beverages

3. Overeating
Consuming too much food — especially after long gaps — puts stress on digestion, producing gas and bloating.

4. Incompatible Food Combinations
Combining certain foods (viruddha ahar), such as:

  • Milk + fruits
  • Curd + meat
  • Fruit + main meal
    can cause increased gas production.

Symptoms of Gas & Bloating

Common signs and symptoms include

  • Frequent passing of gas (flatus)
  • Fullness or tightness in the abdomen
  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Rumbling sounds (borborygmi)
  • Abdominal distension

Possible Complications

Gas and bloating are usually harmless, but persistent symptoms may indicate underlying conditions such as:

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Cramping, bloating, constipation/loose motions.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Gas pressure may worsen acid reflux symptoms like heartburn and chest discomfort.

Lactose Intolerance

Inability to digest lactose leads to bloating, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Crohn’s Disease

Ayurvedic treatment focuses on strengthening digestion and balancing Vata to restore smooth bowel movement.

1. Detox (Shodhana)

Cleanses toxins (Ama) and opens the intestinal channels, helping Vata flow freely.

2. Diet Correction

Eating according to body type and choosing easily digestible food improves Agni and reduces gas.

3. Dosha Balancing

Herbal medicines and lifestyle modifications help prevent recurrence.

4. Panchakarma Therapies

Depending on the condition: Vasti (Medicinal enema), Virechan (Purgation therapy) & Shirodhara
may be recommended.
