Morphology
Jaiphal (Myristica fragrans) is an evergreen, aromatic tree that grows to a height of about 10–20 meters with a straight trunk and a dense, spreading crown. The leaves are simple, alternate, elliptic to oblong, dark green, leathery, and glossy on the upper surface, with a characteristic aromatic odor when crushed. The plant is dioecious, bearing male and female flowers on separate trees; the flowers are small, pale yellow, solitary or in clusters, and possess a pleasant fragrance. The fruit is a fleshy, ovoid to pear-shaped drupe that turns yellow on ripening and splits open to reveal a single seed (nutmeg) surrounded by a bright red, lacy aril known as mace.
