Headache is known as shirshool in Ayurveda headaches are very common problem that most people face in their daily life. How many times we see our colleague, friends, mates and family member complaining about a headache. In this article we will see the causes of headache and learn natural home remedies for headaches.
What is Headache
Headache is a pain that causes discomfort in any part of head. This headaches can be dull, sharp as well as severe stabbing type. Headaches can start slowly or sometimes it start all of sudden. Headach are often seen as symptoms of stress and tension. Other than stress and tension there are many other causes of headache.
Headache from Ayurveda Perpective
In Ayurveda Headach are known as shirshool. Shir means head and shool means pain. There are 11 types of shirshool described by acharya’s .
1. Vata shirshool : Caused because of Vata dosha imbalance
2. Pitta shirshool : because of Pitta dosha imbalance
3. Kapha shirshool : because of Kapha dosha imbalance
4. Tridoshaj shirshool : due to imbalance of all 3 dosha
5. Raktaj shirshool : when blood is affected by dosha’s
6. Krimij shirshool: caused due to fungus, bacteria
7. Kashyaj shirshool : cuased due to weakness
8. Suryavart : type of headache which increases with sun and get relief at night
9. Anantvat : Headcache is associated with pain in neck,eyes and eyebrows.
10.Ardhaobhedak : one sided headache ( Migraine)
11. Shankak rog : Very painful headache.
Types of Headaches
From modern sceinces headaches are of different types some most common are
Tension Headache : This are common headache mostly triggered by stress. The site of pain vary from person to person but is commonly felt all over the body as dull aching sensation.
Sinus Headache : Occurs when the sinus are blocked due to cough and are inflamed because of recurrent allergies. This headache is associated with persisitent pain in cheekbones, forehead, or around the nose.
Migraine : they can cause throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, fatigue and light, noise or sensitivity.
Hypertension headache : The symptoms include pulsating feeling on the both sides of your head accompanied by vision changes, chest pain and sometimes nasal bleeding.
Exertion headche : Happens after rigourus physical activities.
Hormone headache : Very common in females especially during mestrual cycle, menopause or pregnancy.
Cluster headache : Rare type of headache

What are the Causes of Headache
There are a few major causes of headaches mentioned below-
- Excessive consumption of alcohol
- High usage of mobile phones, TV, laptops etc.
- Poor sleeping patterns
- Sleeping during day time
- Speaking too loudly or talking for long hours
- Stress and depression
- Medication of other diseases
- Smoking
- Holding natural urges like urine, crying, yawning.
- Working in hot area or under sun for too long.
- Other underlying diseases include high cholesterol, hypertension, brain diseases etc.
- Excessive indulgence in sex or masturbation

Home Remedies for Headache
Nidaan Parivarjan
First and most simplest home remedies for headache is to identify the causative factor which is causing the headache and try to avoid that factors. This process of avoiding the causative factor is Known as Nidaan Parivarjan in Ayurveda.
Shiro abhyanga ( Head Massage)
Head massaage with herbal ayurvedic oils are great way to relief headache especailly Vata type of headache. Along with the head massage putting 2 to 3 drops of seasame oil in both ears is very effective home remedy for headache
Nasya ( Nasal drops)
Nasya means putting 2 to 3 drops of medicated oil or ghee ( clarified butter) in nose. Ayurvedic oils such as Anu tailam is very effective in headache.
Other than this you can use saffron 1 to 2 thread and put it in 20 ml ghee and boil it. After cooilng it use it for nasya that is putting in nose.
Herbal paste Application
Paste prepared with combination of herbs is also very effective home remedy for headaches.
For Migraine and Pittaj headache
Take powder of chandana ( red sandalwwod), Kamal (), Nagarmotha (), Khus ( vetevria zizonoid) 5 gms each. Then add 1 to 2 teaspoon of ghee ( clarified butter) to it and make a paste. Apply this paste on forehead helps to relieve headache.
For Headache associated with sinus( Kaphaj Headache)
Take powder of turmeric, sonth ( dry ginger), methi seeds and salt 5 gms each. Add little amount of luke warm water and make paste. Apply this paste on forehead and around the nose helps to clear the sinus and provide releif form headache.
Ayurvedic Tea
Herbal Ayurvedic tea is also very effective home remedy to headaches. For this you need is powder of Triphala ( Combition of three herb haritaki, amalaki,and bhibhitaki), Turmeric,Neem leaves and Giloy .
How to make : Take 2 cups of water and add above herbs to it. Boil the water untill it is reduced to half. Now strain it. Sipping this tea is one of the best remedies for headaches.
