Khurasani Ajwain chemical constituents

Khurasani ajwain (hyoscyamus niger), or henbane, has several important chemical constituents which help in the functioning of the plant and helps in treating several problems. Tropane alkaloids consist of hyoscyamine, scopolamine, and atropine.

Hyoscyamine helps in reducing vomiting from motion sickness. Scopolamine, better known as hyoscine, is known for its strong hallucinogenic effects and is used in some psychoactive drugs. Atropine is a racemic mixture of D-hyoscyamine and L-hyoscyamine, and its pharmacological effects are due to binding to muscarinic acetylcholine receptors.

Hyoscyamus niger also contains various other compounds, such as flavonoids, coumarins, sterols, tannins, and terpenes. A crude extract of hyoscyamus niger has been found to have hypotensive, cardiosuppressant, and vasodilator activities.

In Ayurveda it is categorized by three distinct types based on the color of the flowers and seeds: 
 1.Safaid (White): Derived from Hyoscyamus alba.
2. Surkh (Red): Derived from Hyoscyamus muticus.
3. Siyah (Black): Derived from Hyoscyamus niger (the most commonly used Khurasani
Ajwain).
4. Temperament (Mizaj): Historically categorized as Cold and Dry in the third or fourth
degree, reflecting its sedative and anaesthetic effects.

Health Benefits of Khurasani ajwain

1. Digestive Support

It is effective in treating spasmodic digestive disorders, including stomach cramps, intestinal pain, and flatulence. Khurasani ajwain is highly effective in treating various digestive issues, especially those involving Vata imbalance, such as indigestion, bloating, and flatulence. Hyoscyamus niger stimulates the digestive fire (Agni), improves appetite, and alleviates discomfort caused by gas and bloating. It is also used to treat constipation by promoting bowel movement and alleviating abdominal cramps.

Allergic Rashes : If someone is sensitive to khurasani ajwain they may see skin rashes or redness and itching. In this condition it is advisable to discontinue the use .

It may also increase Pitta dosha in the body and therefore may cause hearburn, acidity, and burning.

Khurasani ajwain may cause drowsiness if taken in excess quantity.

Precaution

During breast feeding avoid consuming Khurasani ajwain.

Avoid consuming Khurasni during pregnancy due to lack of research on safety during pregnancy.
