Amaltas is very useful herb in  Ayurveda .  Along with  a detoxifier (toxin removal property) it is also a kushthar ( curing skin diseases). The Amaltas pod( phali) is beneficial in balancing Kapha and Pitta dosha because of its mild purgation property . 

Achraya charak has categorised Amaltas as  Kushthar gana( helps in curing skin problems) as well as Kanduhar gana ( one which relieves itching).

Where as Acharya shushrut as categorised it as Aragvadhadi gana as well as in Shyamadi gana.

Amaltas is an excellent herb for mild purgation. It is the best among all the herbs that have a purgative properties. Amaltas pod ( phalli) along with  it’s leaves are having the purgative property. Chemical composition of Amaltas

Amaltas comprises an array of bioactive constituents including Glycosides, Anthraquinones, Fistulic Acid, Sennosides, Sugars, Saccharose, Mucilage, Pectin. 
In addition to this it also has  Anthraquinones, Rhein, Rheinglucoside, Sennosides A And B, Emodin, Chrysophanic Acid, Phlobaphenes, Fistuacacidin, Lupeol, and Sterols like Beta-Sitosterol And Hexacosanol.

How to use Amaltas

Amaltas can be consumed in various forms, including:

  • Amaltas Powder (Churna):  Take 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon(1-2 grams) of Amaltas powder with luke warm water two times a day after meals.
  • Decoction ( Kadha):  15-20 ml of kadha with equal quantity of water two times day. The Kadha is prepared by boiling the Amlatas in water, useful for skin  and constipation.
  • Fruit Pulp  : 10 to 20 grams of phal majja (fruit pulp) after meals at night, once a day.
  • Part Used :  Panchanga means all parts of these herbs can be used that is  leaves, stem, flower, roots as well as fruits.

Home Remedies of Amaltas

In Eczema  : Take fresh Amaltas leaves and make paste from it.   Now add 10 ml of kanji to it . Apply this on the eczema patches  2 times a day for 7 days help to recover from eczema.

For itching & fungal infection:  Take leaves of Amaltas and make powder  from it . Add buttermilk to and make paste. Apply this on the part affected by fungal infection. This will help relieve itching . 

For constipation   : Make decoction using the  fruit pulp (phalli) of amaltas, bark of baheda fruits and senna leaves. This decoction  helps in elimination of waste from the body.

For cough :Take fruit pulp of Amaltas, add jaggery to it and mix it well. Make small round tablets of this mix. Consume this tablets two times a day empty stomach stoamach. 

What are the side effects of Amaltas?

While Amaltas( Cassia fistula) has many benefits and is generally safe, however it may cause

  • Allergic reactions in rare cases. 
  • Excessive loose motions in case of overdose.
  • Nausea, abdomen pain, cramps and vomiting.
