What is Psoriasis
The word psoriasis is derived from the Greek word Psora which means to “itch”. Psoriasis is basically a chronic and inflammatory autoimmune skin disease affecting the skin. It is persistent skin disorder that results in red, thickened patches on the skin along with the shedding of silvery scales, these patches usually occurs on the elbows, knees, scalps and joints but they can appear on other areas as well. These patches can be itchy and painful.
Psoriasis from Ayurvedic treatment perpective
In Ayurveda all skin diseases are described under the common disease Kushtha. In Kushtha roga all the three doshas (Vata,Pitta,Kapha) get vitiated and they involves twacha (skin), raktha (blood), mamsa (muscle), and lasika (lymph or plasma).In Ayurveda text we find 18 different types of Kushtha roga. Kushtha is divided in 2 types as Maha and Kshudra Kushtha on the basis of dosha dominance and severity. Among these 18 types Psoriasis can be correlated with two types of Kushtha roga namely Ek Kushtha and Kitibh Kushtha with Kapha-Vata dominancy.
What are the Causes of Psoriasis
The exact cause is not known. However, your genes and immune system have a great contribution towards this condition. Some of the causes that triggers include
- Emotional stress
- Environmental factors such as trauma, sunlight, climatic changes
- Immune system is supposed to play a major role
- Hereditary also plays a role in development of psoriasis
- Dry skin
- Medicines play a role like anti-malaria drugs, beta blockers and anti-inflammatory drugs
- Too much of alcohol consumption
- Excessive smoking
- Abnormality in mechanism in which the skin grows and replaces itself causes psoriasis
Other causes as described in Ayurveda text are
- Virrudh Anna sevan that means eating wrong food combination according to Ayurveda
- Suppressing natural urges like (vomiting, urinating, and defecating).
- Excessive exposure to sunlight after heavy meals.
- Intake of food even if the previous meal is undigested
- Improper administration of Panchkarma therapies
- Sleeping during daytime
- Committing sinful acts
Symptoms Of Psoriasis

You should know the signs and symptoms of Kushtha roga (psoriasis) tend to vary from one person to another. However, some of the common ones include:
- Raised red patches on the skin topped with loose silvery scales, usually on knees or elbow
- Itching or burning
- Dry and cracked skin that may bleed
- Joint swelling, tenderness and pain
- Thickened, pitted or ridged nails
- Loss of sensation in affected skin areas
- Tired and fatigue
Complications
Psoriatic Arthritis :Psoriatic arthritis is one of the commonest complication of psoriasis about one third of the people having psoriasis may have arthritis. Sign’s of psoriatic arthritis include stiff joint, pain, swollen fingers and toes. Without treatment Psoriatic Arthritis can permanently damage your joints.
Hair loss :It means If you have scalp psoriasis, an unwelcome complication may be hair loss. In addition to an ithchy,scaly scalp,you may lose clumps of hair at a time, even within days.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice for Psoriasis
Avoid consuming opposite foods.
- Do not control natural urges like vomiting, urination, bowels, etc.
- Do not take cold water bath immediately after a heavy workout, traveling, a long walk, etc.
- Take care not to consume foods which cause indigestion person should prefer eating light food.
- Absolutely do not eat too much of salty, sour or acidic foods.
- Avoid sleeping in afternoons.
- Say no to radish, sesame, jaggery (gur), curds, fish and other sour foods.
- Regularly do yoga and meditation
Simple Home Remedies for Psoriasis
- Get some Sunlight –
If you get time try to get sunlight in the morning hours. This actually helps to improve the lesions. However, ensure you do not stand for long hours as it can worsen the outbreaks.
- Take bath daily –
Do not ever skip the bath. Taking a bath on a daily basis helps you to get rid of scales. You are advised to use herbal medicated lukewarm water and mild soap having oils and fats respectively.
- Moisturize your Skin –
Your dry skin asks you to moisturize the skin. Ensure you apply it directly after having a bath. Ayurvedic medicated oils are very effective, you can even consider moisturizer.
