What is Acid Reflux

When the acid in your stomach rises into esophagus ( the food pipe ) it is known as Acid reflux . This condition generallly happens after taking large and heavy meals, or lying down immediately after taking meals.

Occasional Acid reflux can be managed with home remedies. However if recurrent acid reflux is happening and is ignored then it leads to more chronic condition known as GERD.

Acid Reflux from Ayurvedic treatment perpective

From Ayurvedic treatment perspective  Acid reflux is caused because of imbalance of Vata- Pitta dosha in the body.  The natural flow of vata dosha  is in downward direction . However because of weak digestive fire ( Agni) ,the Ama accumulates in the digestive tract, blocking the natural flow of Vata dosha. As a result of this this Vata dosha starts moving in upward direction. This vata dosha takes the stomach content and acid ( pitta) in the stomach along with it, this puts  pressure on the valve of stomach known as lower esopheageal sphinter.

As this acid ( pitta) , the stomach content and ama reaches the esophagus ( the food pipe) it irritates and inflames the tissue inside the esophagus making person uncomfortable.

What are the Causes of Acid Reflux

In Ayurveda, acid reflux is believed to be a disorder of the Agni (digestive fire). It arises from an imbalance of  Vata-Pitta dosha, which is associated with heat and fire. Factors that can aggravate Pitta dosha include:

  • Consuming hot/spicy/sour foods
  • Overeating/irregular meal timings
  • Excessive stress/anger
  • Drinking alcohol & caffeine consumption
  • Smoking slows down your digestion and causes your stomach to produce more acid.
  •  Obesity
  • Certain medicines which are generally used like pain-killers, medication to control blood pressure, hormone therapy are known to cause Acid reflux

Symptoms Of Acid Reflux

Chest pain not related to heart.

Burning sensation in the chest and throat, usually after eating or lying down.

You might notice acid, food or liquids backwashing from your stomach into your throat after eating. This is also called regurgitation.

Sour test of acid in your throat

Nausea feeling of vommiting

Dry cough : Chronic acid reflux can trigger symptoms of coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

Complications

Esophagitis :It is a inflammation in the lining of your esophagus. Chronic esophagitis can cause chronic pain and complications, like ulcers in your esophagus.

Barrett’s Esophagus :It means that the tissues lining your esophagus change to look like intestinal lining. This change happens after long exposure to acid and inflammation. It’s a risk factor for esophageal cancer.

Esophageal stricture : Scar tissue develops in your esophagus which makes it narrow, this is called stricture. It makes swallowing difficult.

When to See a Doctor for Acid Reflux?

Although mild cases of acid reflux can be managed through lifestyle changes and Ayurvedic home remedies, it’s important to know when a professional medical advice becomes necessary. Here are some key signals that it is time to consult a certified Ayurveda Doctor:

Persistent Symptoms

If you have recurring acid reflux symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, or a burning sensation in the chest for more than two weeks, it is important to seek medical help. Persistent symptoms may indicate more serious conditions that might require focused Ayurvedic treatment.

Difficulty Swallowing

If swallowing becomes painful or if the food feels stuck in your throat or chest, this could be due to damage in the oesophagus caused by stomach acid. Prompt medical attention is needed if this condition, also called esophagitis, develops.

Nighttime Symptoms

It is important to visit an Ayurveda doctor if you experience acid reflux symptoms which wake you up at night or make sleep impossible. Nighttime acid reflux can result in erosion of the lining of the oesophagus, causing significant discomfort.

Unintended Weight Loss or Loss of Appetite

It includes a substantial loss of appetite as eating becomes difficult, and this may be associated with unintended weight loss, indicating grave health implications which are related to GERD.

Increasing Pain or Discomfort

Increased pain in the abdomen that extends to the back, neck, jaw and arm could be a sign of a serious underlying condition requiring immediate attention.
